Beth McElroy is a partner in the firm and currently serves as the County Administrator for Jefferson County. She was appointed to fill that position in December of 2009 by the Probate Court of Jefferson County, Alabama. In her role as County Administrator, Beth handles estates of all sizes and complexity. She is responsible for gathering assets, pursuing litigation on behalf of these estates, including wrongful death actions, managing estate funds and property, and disbursing assets to the heirs.
Prior to becoming the County Administrator, Beth’s practice primarily involved insurance defense, with a special focus on life and health insurance litigation in contractual, fraud and bad faith contexts. She continues to actively maintain this aspect of her practice. She has successfully defended shareholder derivative suits, class actions, and a variety of insurance based claims. Her practice has routinely involved complex insurance programs and the resolution of corporate disputes. She also assists insurance clients with claims evaluation and compliance issues. In addition to her trial court experience, Beth has successfully handled appeals at all levels of the Alabama State Courts, Federal Courts, and the Eleventh Circuit, and has argued before the Alabama Supreme Court.
Beth is the Past President of the Birmingham Bar Foundation and serves on the Board of the National Conference of Bar Foundations. She was honored to join the 2019 Class of Fellows of the Birmingham Bar Foundation. She has previously served as President of the Probate Section of the Birmingham Bar Association and as a member of the Executive Committee of the Birmingham Bar Association. She is a frequent speaker at continuing legal education seminars.
Beth has practiced with Joel Dillard, David McKnight and Randy James since her graduation from law school in 1997. She is a 1994 graduate of Birmingham Southern College with a B.A. in history. She received her law degree from the University of Alabama, cum laude. Beth was born in Shreveport, Louisiana and grew up in Birmingham.
